More on Onions...

Porcelain's mention of onions (and where to put 'em) last week reminded me of these fun lights. The Cibola Table Lamp by Scabetti has been in my MUST POST file for awhile. I love it, especially in the burgundy, which brings to mind red onions, which then brings to mind my favorite sandwich (see #7).

After locating the Scabetti website, I discovered they also make a similar Cibola Pendant. So chic! If you're crying out to get your hands on one, you must contact the designers, as each piece is made to order.

Bonus Bone: Plant Pod

Plant pod, at perch! design

Why hasn't someone thought of this before?! Sure there are plenty of hanging baskets that have saucers that are attached, but most of them are so small you almost always have overflow and a drippy, muddy mess on your floor. Perch design's plant pod seems foolproof. Plus it is ultra chic. A perfect find at a time when we should be bringing some of our plants indoors.

For these reasons, I, Porcelain, declare this a Design Boner.

Onion storage

Hardwood and I cook with onions a lot! We always have a bag or two laying around ready to be used in making vegetable stock, sautéed to put over a few pierogies or thinly sliced for a sandwich. Our current storage situation is rather pathetic. Behold!

Onions on a "festive" tray on top of our cat food storage (old litter container).

It's rather unsightly. Martha Stewart, we are not. So we've been looking around for other options - something that won't take up much space and that will allow some air flow.

I spotted the Grom storage containers in the new Ikea catalog and think they might be perfect. They can hang on the bottom shelf in our pantry and since they are so cheap we could
grab a second one for some potatoes and other wintertime tubers.

A Daily Delight

Remember those Delight-ful Twist and Shut bowls I bonus boned a few weeks ago? Well, there are new artists making 'em pretty and they also happen to be today's web bargain (FREE SHIPPING!).

Love this Catalina Estrada one...[swoon].

A Salad Story

Urgh, making dinner. It can be fun, romantic, soothing, etc, but it can also be a pain in the arse.

Between having a broken refrigerator (2 weeks!), hanging out with Heat (3 months!), and working long hours (4-ever), I recently have found myself relying on easy, often-boxed dinners. This means a lot of frozen pizzas and eating out.

When I was living with Bamboo, the two of us got into the good habit of making simple but healthy dinners and exercising more. After a few months of this, I started craving nutrient-rich foods, like big ol' salads and crisp fruit. But I fear I've slipped back to dreaming of a gyros platter with a side of cookie dough.

To get back on track, I hit the gym yesterday and Heat & I made this inspirational salad for dinner:

Start with a big bowl. Throw this stuff in it.
Toss. Eat.

OMG, oishii! I would have taken a photo of the dish but it was late and I was hongry. In truth, the salad isn't much to look at because the avocado smooshes all over but it is very spicy/tasty. And you should try it. And that is all.

Mount this!

Would I be more organized if I had this set of shelves?

I'd like to think so, but the answer would probably be no. I'm pretty helpless when it comes to staying with organization. I'm good at first, but then I get lazy and eventually the papers, books, mail, and other useless crap builds up. I don't think there is an organization system out there that can handle me.

Press 'n' Dress

Madame est Servie, by Aïssa Logerot

I NEVER iron. But I might be more prone to do so if I had this ironing board/mirror standing up smart in the corner of my bedroom.

Of course I would have to buy an iron but, after doing so, I would certainly offer my (poor) ironing and (adequate) primping skills to designer Aïssa Logerot if she needs someone to test out this conceptual, multifunctional piece. Send me an email if you need a wrinkly and unaccessorized guinea pig, Aïssa!

Bonus Bone: A Fixed Fridge

My refrigerator, for the first time in just over two weeks, is actually working! Hurrah! I no longer have to sustain myself on Fla-Vor-Ice and a small cooler (within the fridge).

For this reason, I, Cardboard, declare all this a Design Boner.

Deadly Red

Happy karma is coming to me in a BIG way because, this weekend, I get to play host to the ever-astrological Miss Brig. I am wicked excited.

I DO plan on having my fridge fixed so keeping the nail polish and guac properly chilled shouldn't be a problem but I fear I have failed in the non-refrigeration department. If only - alas! - I had the foresight and wherewithal to snap up a set 7 Deadly Glasses.

2 bloggers + 1 night in Chicago / x bottles of red = 7+ sins. Easy.

Bonus Bone: Great Lakes poster

Great Lakes, at Ork Posters

Hardwood gave me the Chicago neighborhood poster for my birthday a couple years ago. I love its great design and amazing use of typography. So I was tickled pink to see that Ork recently released a poster of the Great Lakes. I hail from Michigan and take great pride showing folks where I grew up on my "mitten", a distinctly Michigan quirk. The first time I did this to an out-of-stater they looked at me like I was crazy. You are from the area just below your thumb??!

For these reasons, I, Porcelain, declare this a Design Boner.

Freezer Teaser

I just mentioned to Porcelain how I had never heard of anyone making grape ice cream/sorbet/gelato. Is it even possible?

Turns out, I just don't get my mouth out that much. Porcelain found this recipe for Concord Grape Sorbet on Gourmet. If you don't want to try it for the taste, what about making it solely for that color? Delicious, all around.

Anyone know of any other grape flavored icy desserts? Porcelain's got an ice cream maker and I feel like stuffing it with bunches.

Bonus Bone: Artist Series Twist and Shut Bowls

So, apparently these portable bowls are out of stock but they are reordering more...and they should because they are super!

Not only do these travel meal bowls showcase the artistry of craft favorites, such as Amy Ruppel and Matte Stephens, but they also seal tight. Twist and Shut means that soup and even cereal can be taken (in style) on the go.

For this reason, I, Cardboard, declare all this a Design Boner.

Fridge Foil

While I was relaxing on a long-weekend vacation, my fridge decided to do the same. Slowly but defiantly, the refrigerator section spent four days lazily moving toward a warm, ripe siesta and, just today, the freezer decided to join in the fun.

If you happen to be forced into this disorienting situation (will mustard keep?), here is a handy list of items that should not be given the chance to test the new tropical climate. Immediately feed your dumpster:

  • Turkey Bacon
  • Goat Cheese
  • Pre-Cut Fruit (specifically watermelon and pineapple which melts into a foamy, off-gassing jacuzzi of stink)
  • White Bean Puree
  • Flour Tortillas (that happen to be resting next to the bio hazard that was the pineapple/watermelon)
  • Fish (!)
  • Most Dairy (milk, cream, although butter is a trooper)
I have an appointment (window) with the friendly repair person from Sears tomorrow. I'm hoping I can then run straight to the grocery to re-stock my freezer with Drumsticks and vodka but we'll just have to see.

Perhaps I'll start to enjoy Euro-chic daily market trips, anticipating that evening's menu as I cross cobblestones with single-serving chicken breast and leafy celery stalks in my tote. That, or I'll just start eating a lot of Ramen and crackers. And if Sears jerks me around enough, I might just get rid of the thing all together.

Wish me cool, crisped luck and I'll soon have you over for mayonnaise.
