S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G: IKEA

Porcelain and I took a trip out to IKEA last Friday. We reserved our I-GO and, in spite of the quick and nasty blizzard, made our way - slowly - out the to the 'burbs. We started the day with the hot mess of a BK breakfast, a pre-suburban shopping trip tradition. While in Burger King, we had a brief sad/crazy moment when Porcelain spotted a fellow diner "feeding" french toast sticks to two framed photographs that shared his tabletop. Really sad = if the photos were of deceased loved ones. Really crazy = if the photos were of Joe Rogan and Elmo.

Please enjoy this smattering of IKEA photosnaps. I especially want those of you without a local IKEA to imagine you're here with us, giggling at fake toilets and towering over the teeny tiny scales.

KIVSTA Velvet Shades

The main reason for this trip was so Porcelain could pick up a LACK bookcase (in white). She did that and had a few minutes of fun in the lighting department with a stuffed shark.

I want to know who has the design guts to wire a whole wall of those blue shell lights (haha, called
SMILA SNÄCKA) in their bathroom or along the ceiling of a walk-in closet? I challenge thee!

HEMNES Chest
I'm still scouting out a sideboard and almost caved for this HEMNES chest in the "As Is" section. It was marked down from $250 to $174 and looked in near perfect condition. Alas, it's all drawers - no doors - and, therefore, not ideal for dish and glassware. It's also pretty ginormous and I'm trying to pair down on large furniture. Guess I'll have to keep looking...

F-U-N! IKEA shopping trips are, hands down, my favorite shopping trips of all!

Thanks, pigtown! That is some dang fascinating IKEA trivia (and I'm not being sarcastic in the least).

I also wrote about Ikea naming all of their cheap items after towns in Denmark, and Denmark's pissed about it! hahahaha!

Too funny; we were just at Ikea yesterday and were looking at those funky lampshades. I'm not sure they're my taste, but I do like them.

Does anybody else get kind of depressed at Ikea? I like a lot of their stuff.

I like a lot of their stuff BUT, I'm not sure the low prices merit the generally poor quality. Thoughts?

I'm with you Tate. I've learned to make a list of what I want to look at, but not necessarily buy. Because more often than not, when I see it in person I'm kind of let down by the quality of the piece and will pass on buying it. I know not to expect super amazing quality, but I don't want everything in my place to be made of particle board or fiber board.

I did see this table though and really liked it.

It was made of solid wood and felt really solid.

My favorite item there bar none is this:

It looks great, is cheap and appeared solid. It comes in 3 colors. I want to start collecting vintage bakelite radios and I think this would be a very cool place to display them.

What do you think?

That bookcase is one of my favs as well. Nicely designed, pretty sturdy, and affordable. We have two of them at home.

And a thumbs up on the radio idea, T8.
